One Day I’ll Have Big Girl Furniture, But Today I Have a Trampoline, Sensory Swing & Shake Plate

My living room is like a sensory jungle gym.

If you walked into our apartment expecting throw pillows and a stylish coffee table with a candle and decorative bowl, you’d be…disappointed. Instead, you’d find:

  • An indoor trampoline
  • A sensory swing dangling on a frame
  • Bean bag chairs that have seen better days
  • A spinning seat
  • Mats everywhere
  • A vibrating plate
  • 2 super size exercise balls

And zero “big girl furniture.”

Yes, I scroll Pinterest. Yes, I fantasize about a beach-themed living room. A dining table that doesn’t double as a therapy station. Maybe even a lamp that exists purely for ambiance. One day, one glorious day, I’ll get there. But today? Nope. Today, my living room is a regulation station. A therapy gym. A ninja training ground. A sensory haven. And it works.

Earlier today, I was ready to throw my laptop out the window over website drama. Hosting problems, mysterious setting changes, wasted time on the phone. I was spiraling, frustrated and tired of managing everything.

Then came playtime.

Not outside, that’s a no-go because of elopement risks, but right here, in the chaos that is our “living room.” We played catch between the trampoline and the swing. Balls bounced unpredictably off mats. Laughter echoed through the chaos. I watched my boys’ hand-eye coordination and focus sharpen in real-time. And just like that, my website meltdown? Irrelevant.

The “big girl furniture” isn’t the point. The polished aesthetics aren’t the point. The outside world can have its noise. Inside our bubble? We were winning.

Special needs parenting is measured differently. It’s in regulated nervous systems, laughter, and safety. Not in Pinterest-perfect spaces.

One day, sure, I’ll have the big girl furniture. Beach themed beauty included. But today, I’ll take the trampoline, the sensory swing, the shake plate… and the joy that comes with them.

Because these small wins? They matter more than the noise.

If your house looks more like a therapy gym than a Pinterest board…

You’re not failing adulthood. You’re prioritizing safety.

And that matters way more than throw pillows!
